Hiking
There are several great hiking trails in and around Athens. In addition, Hocking Hills, named number 19 in under-the-radar vacation spots by Buzzfeed, is a 45-minute drive. Here is a list of great hiking spots around Athens. We especially recommend the trails around Stroud's Run. If you decide to visit Hocking Hills, we recommend the trails around Conkle's Hollow and Old Man's Cave.
Other outdoor activities
The Hocking Hills Canoe Livery rents out canoes and kayaks for trips down the Hocking River (they will drive you to a spot up river and you paddle back to your car). They rent out canoes and kayaks for $15/hour. They also offer group discounts for 10+ people.
The boat house at Stroud's Run rents out canoes, paddleboats and kayaks for $10/hour. There is also a small beach at Stroud's Run.
If you are really feeling adventurous, you can take a canopy tour of Hocking Hills. More information on that here.
Around the hotel
The Holiday Inn Express is next to the Athens Community Center, which guests can access for $5 per day. The 21 mile long Hockhocking Adena Bikeway runs directly behind the community center. The bikepath is great for walking or riding. Here are a few links for bike rentals.
